Yes, under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, all food business operators in India must have a valid FSSAI registration or license, including restaurants, caterers, food manufacturers, and retailers.
Basic registration takes 7–10 days. State license takes 30–60 days. Central license may take 60–90 days depending on verification requirements.
FSSAI licenses can be obtained for 1 to 5 years. It must be renewed 30 days before expiry. Basic registration is valid for 1–5 years.
Operating a food business without FSSAI registration is a punishable offence with penalties up to ₹5 lakhs and imprisonment up to 6 months.
